Making science accessible on Instagram: science.lu

The Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) has the remit of making science and research accessible to the general public. A central portal for this is science.lu. However, a website alone no longer reaches all target audiences today – social media is the most important source of information for many people. Superblau developed the social media concept and has been continuously implementing it since November 2024. The result: around 50 percent more followers in just a few months – and science communication that acts as a counterweight to fake news.

THE PROBLEM

The content of the science communication platform science.lu reaches its target audience – but not where they look for information today: on social media.

The Solution

A social media strategy that translates science into the experiential format of Instagram & Co. – without losing its professional depth.

THE CHALLENGE

Science as a counterweight to fake news – understandable, engaging, without oversimplification

In 2025, science communication faces a paradoxical task: it must present complex research findings in a medium optimised for speed, imagery, and emotion, while remaining factually accurate. This is precisely where our commitment to science.lu comes in.

Added to this is Luxembourg's multilingualism: content must work in Luxembourgish, German, French, and English. A story about period pain, nutrition, endometriosis, or research awards must therefore be relevant not only linguistically but also culturally – to a population that commutes between local realities and international mobility.

Discover how tiny particles in our atmosphere play a trick on our eyes. 🧐✨ Did you know? Shorter, bluer wavelengths of light are scattered more than longer, redder wavelengths. That's why we see blue most of the time! But when the sun is low, its light travels through more atmosphere, scattering out the blue and leaving us with those stunning sunset reds. 🌅Learn more about the science behind colours with @fnr_luxembourg's #science communications!#scienceisawesome #physics #light #colours #atmosphere #research #luxembourg #FNR #Superblau.

The approach

Social Media Concept: Science as a Service, Not a Lecture

The social media concept developed by Superblau is based on a clear promise: to make knowledge practical and usable. Instead of presenting abstract research, we translate content into service-oriented formats – „What can you do about period pain?“, „Why do women get period pain when they have their period?“, „Mr Science explains …“. This format approach leverages the strengths of the platforms without veering into tabloid territory.

Visual recognition as brand character

With clear templates and a consistent colour system, we have given science.lu a distinctive visual identity on social media. The content is immediately recognisable with every scroll – an important factor in a feed that is flooded with content. At the same time, the presentation remains human, curious and inviting.

Daily implementation as an ongoing service

Strategy is just the start. We are responsible for the operational implementation of the channels: editorial, design, production and community management. This ensures that science.lu remains continuously present as a brand – and can react to current research findings, discourses, or societal debates as soon as they become relevant.

THE RESULT

+50 percent followers in a few months – organically

Since we began our engagement in November 2024, the follower numbers on the science.lu channels have increased by around 50 percent – without any performance budget, but driven by a consistent content strategy and constant quality. This is more than a KPI: it is confirmation that science communication on Instagram works, when it is taken seriously – as an independent discipline and not as an add-on to classic press work.

Science communication as a societal task

The need for reliable science communication continues to grow: In a media environment where disinformation appears free of charge and science seems strenuous, reliable, well-crafted communication acts as a democratic infrastructure. Science.lu contributes precisely to this – and Superblau is proud to support this mission as a strategic and operational partner.

The design of Superblau is peppered with original creative ideas and was very well thought out from the beginning with many nice details. The result is very vivid and clear, and makes you want to start the project, as the designers went far beyond what was required.
